Alviano (Tr)

Storia

Not far from the Amerina Road and situated on a hill in the Tiber Valley lies Alviano. This village, with its medieval urban structure, is surrounded by defensive walls and preserves intact the imposing Castle that dominates the surrounding territory. It was built by Count Offredo, progenitor of the Alviano family, around 996, a family that during the Middle Ages, with the support of the Papal State, became one of the most influential in the area. The history of Alviano is closely linked to that of its most illustrious citizen: the condottiero Bartolomeo di Alviano, known as Liviano, one of the greatest condottieri and protagonists of the Renaissance, a prominent figure in the political and military environment.

Culture

The Castle of Alviano features a trapezoidal layout, with circular towers positioned at the corners. It was built in the Renaissance period on a previous medieval structure, and within it coexist the characteristics of a military fortress and a noble residence. In addition to housing the municipal offices, the Castle also hosts an ethnographic museum of peasant civilization, preserving typical tools of Alviano’s civilization, images, and ancient agricultural techniques, as well as the museum of knights errant.

The Church of St. Mary of the Assumption

Located in one of the most panoramic areas of the town, it is one of the numerous points of interest to see in the town of Alviano. Dating back to the late 1200s, it was renovated in the early 1500s. It preserves a precious panel by Nicolò Alunno, representing the Assumption of the Virgin surrounded by glorifying angels (1484).

St. Francis and the Chapel of the Swallows

At the site of the miracle of the swallows, where tradition tells that the Saint, engaged in preaching, asked the birds to be silent and they obeyed, today stands the Swallows Chapel. The small building was constructed at a scenic spot, far from the inhabited area of Alviano, from which one can enjoy an extraordinary panorama of the valley and the Alviano Oasis.

In Alviano, the episode of the swallows is depicted in the frescoes of the noble chapel, in the castle built by Bartolomeo d’Alviano. The chapel was donated in 1963 by the municipality to the fraternity of the Third Order.

Le Casette di Creta

On the remains of an ancient shallow sea, which about 1.5 to 2 million years ago lapped against the limestone ridge of the Monti Amerini, the Alviano badlands were formed.

From the clay of the badlands, mixed with water and straw for millennia, people have obtained simple and humble dwellings, traces of which remain in the surroundings of Alviano, in the area called Colle Villa. This is a unique phenomenon in this area linked to the poorest farming world. Built with ancient and eco-friendly techniques, they testify to the connection between rural history and that of the territory.

ALVIANO LAKE – WWF OASIS

Nearby, adjacent to the lake of the same name, lies one of the most important wetland areas in Italy: the Alviano Oasis, a wildlife reserve covering approximately 900 hectares spread across the municipalities of Alviano, Montecchio, Civitella d’Agliano, and Guardea, where the park entrance is located.

Managed and protected by WWF, within it, it is possible to practice birdwatching.

Many bird species are present, including the Kingfisher, the Grey Heron, and the White Heron, which is the symbol of the protected area.

The lake, formed in the late 1960s with the damming of the Tiber River, attracted not only birds but also hunters for years. It was only in 1977 that the Umbria Region decreed the prohibition of hunting throughout the area, definitively ensuring life in the reserve. The creation of two trails and an equipped educational workshop has allowed the Oasis to become a place of great attraction both for tourism and scientific purposes.

Today the CEA is part of the Infea Network of CRIDEA.
